A modern-day classic, this serene suite blends what homeowners Deanne and Rob Seiler value most: easy-living space marked by relaxed sophistication. To create this duluxe parental retreat, the couple tore down walls at the rear of their San Diego home and framed out what's become one of the whole family's favorite rooms in the house.
In addition to the sleeping area, the couple incorporated a cozy nook centered by a marble-faced fireplace. Two bathrooms prevent grooming gridlock and supply the Seilers, as well as their 10-year-old doughter and 6-year-old son, with leisurely soaks in "Mom's" whirlpool and exuberant splashes in "Dad's" shower, which is equipped with an extra showerhead that can be set at kid height. "I wanted a master suite that was comfortable and elegant" Deanne says, "Somewhere you can lie and read a book or sit by the fire.
I wanted a big fourposter bed that you see from the doorway and cloud take a good run at and jump into. We've got one masculine bath because my husband wanted something more macho. My husband's really into storage and built-ins, and the bath gave us a place to have those things. I wanted something feminine not faoufou feminine, but something elegant and not overdone."
The Seilers worked with designer Kim Keywan Etherton to create a suite around Deanne'e favorite shace of green. Etherton fashioned three rooms united by color, surface treatments, and fabrics. "It's a very neutral design," Etherton says. "If you're going to use neutals, you must introduce texture and pattern, and add color as accents." She did just that. Sculptural furnishings including the column-post bed and carved table, chest, and chair shimmering stone, and shades of green combine for space that soothe instead of startle.
In teh bedroom, creamy walls, a marble-faced fireplace, and naturally stained woods are calm counterpoints to the sage bedding, plaid table skirt, and comfy love seat. Textured tab-top panels, attached to a fabric covrd cornice with bronze rosette pins, echo the sandy tones of the bed skirt and upholstered headboard.
Etherton carried the hues and surfaces from the bedroom into the adjoining baths. In deanne's bath, swags similar in color to the bedroom draperies soften the "squareness" of glass block windows and tiles; the surrounds and vanity countertops. In Robs' bath, hunter green countertops and medium green tiles put a masculine spin on the bedroom's more muted colors.
"In her bathroom, we carried the same tones from the bedroom," Etherton says. "Her bathroom is more in keeping with the bedroom. The washed green is carried in as towels, acents, and on the vanity stool. In Rob's bath, we gave him a richer, more masculine look with the tumbled marble and cherry cabinets."
Designed for two (or for four when the kids come in for a snuggle or water play), The master suite has fulfilled all the Seilers' expectations, and more.
" Sometimes my whole family is in our room. It's really a home within a home," says Deanne, who loves the company, but likes it even better after lights out for the kids. " I love to come here and take a bath after I get the kids to bed. It's my own little retreat."
