Designing a guest room is akin to solving a mys-tery. Who will stay there a man, woman, or both? Will guests need working as well as sleeping space? What about a sitting area? California designers Kather-ine Bloodworth and Judy Swenson stylishly solved the puzzel while revamping a woefully outdated bedroom and bath into these plush and practical guest quarters.

Though the north-facing bedroom was dark and dated, ist 16x20-foot propotions did allow distinct sleep-ing, working, and conversation areas. "We thought about what we would like to have if we ware staying at some-one'e home" Bloodworth says of their approach.

Artichoke-inspired colors primarily pale greens and yellows create a calm atmosphere. To spark things up, the designers plied textures from the smooth sheen of silk to the rich nap of velvet. Patterns envilen the room even more. The down comferter is striped, while the the conversation area includes plaid chair and a gridded area rug. It's amix that's at once comfortable and eclectic enough to be interisting.

Mirrors above the headboard and desk left reflect light, brigthening the northern exposure room. A blacklit bookcase with a frosted-glass door provides delicate night time ilumination.

Compensating for the lack of sin area special features, including a built-in bookcase theat wears a new door and acts as a night-light. To achive a dramatic effect, the designers lined the inside of the 5.1/2x8 foot door frame with small hologen lamps. Cats though the frosted glass, the lights glow softly.

Elegant and restained, the renovated bath exudes a contemporary spirit. Etched-glass doors conceal the shower; the mahogany vanity includes a square sink surrounded by tiles that echo the bedroom's grid motif.

Summing up their approach, swenson says the pair avoided a design that is overly masculine or feminine. Instead, adds Bloodworth, " We wanted to make it a comfortable place for anyone".
